Frequently Asked Questions
Serving San Diego and all of California via remote evaluations.
1. What is a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) and why do I need one?
Answer: A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a specially trained and federally qualified clinician who evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations. If you work in a safety-sensitive position (such as a CDL driver, pilot, or transit worker) and have a violation, you are legally required to complete the SAP process before you can return to duty.
2. How do I start the Return-to-Duty process?
Answer: The first step is to schedule an Initial Evaluation. During this session, we will assess your situation and provide a specific recommendation for education or treatment. Once you have completed those recommendations, we conduct a Follow-Up Evaluation to determine if you are eligible to return to safety-sensitive work.
3. Can I complete my SAP evaluation online?
Answer: Yes. Current DOT guidelines allow for remote SAP evaluations via secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing. This allows us to provide fast, professional services to employees across California and beyond, regardless of their location, while maintaining full federal compliance.
4. How long does it take to get back to work?
Answer: The timeline depends on your specific situation and how quickly you complete the recommended education or treatment program. However, at ReturnToDutyNow.com, we prioritize fast scheduling for your initial and follow-up interviews to ensure there are no unnecessary delays in your process.
5. Who sees the results of my evaluation?
Answer: Your evaluation is confidential, but the final “Notice of Compliance” must be shared with your employer’s Designated Employer Representative (DER) or recorded in the FMCSA Clearinghouse (for CDL drivers). This documentation is what proves to the DOT that you have successfully met the federal requirements to return to work.
